Different Types of Dining Tables and Other Dining Room Furniture

Perhaps the most important of all home accessories are the furniture that we choose to fill our homes with. However, before you can begin purchasing furniture, it's important to know what your options are. In the dining room, most people assume their options for home accessories and decor are the dining table and its accompanying chairs. This isn't true and there are actually a wide variety of furniture you can work into your dining home decor scheme.

Dining Tables and Chairs

It's true, the dining table and chairs are the most important furniture you can have in your dining space. Without the table and chairs, your dining room isn't really a dining. After all, without these furniture, where does one 'dine?'

That being said, there are a wide variety of styles when it comes to dining tables and chairs. There are pedestal style tables, arts and crafts or mission style tables, picnic tables, Danish modern tables and much, much more. There are literally thousands of different table and chair styles.

Buffets

A buffet is a piece of furniture that is pressed up against one wall that is meant for placing the food for serving. It is similar to buffet style restaurants, where all of the food is set up elsewhere and you must take your plate up to retrieve your food before sitting down to eat. It is one of the less popular furniture found in dining rooms today, but it is still an option should you decide you need it or have the space to accommodate it.

Sideboards

Today, sideboard is typically another term for buffet; though sideboards are the more common term for this furniture type. Sideboards feature a flat top that may have cupboards, drawers or shelves below. Sideboard furniture are used to store dishes, glasses, charger plates, place mats, napkins and other table linens. The term buffet, on the other hand, can also refer to a piece of furniture that accommodates the laying out of food but does not necessarily offer storage.

Console Tables

Console tables are not necessarily meant for the dining room; but if limited space is available they may be a better option in comparison to a large buffet or sideboard. Console tables are typically smaller, with less depth than a sideboard or buffet. Console furniture are great for showing off home accessories or serving foods in a tight space. However, they are not good for storage and are generally only recommended when the dining space is tight and no other options are available.

These are just a few of the many furniture that can be used in the dining area. Depending on the size of your dining area, you may choose to incorporate other pieces, such as an accent table or plant stands. However, this is purely based on the size of your dining room and your personal decorating style.
