Ceramic tile is great for many creative ideas. In my home there are many ceramic tiles from the fifties which give it a checkered black and white theme. But lately I've been considering changing some things about the design of the tile. I've come up with a few good ideas I'd like to share.
In one of our bathrooms the ceramic tile is not only covering the floor with the black and white checker pattern, but half of the walls as well. The tile comes up to my neck all the way around the room on all of the walls. I actually like it that way because tile prevents mold better than wood. My last floor got rotten beneath the linoleum because the water soaked in between the tub and rotted the boards away. In this bathroom it's almost entirely tile, but the problem is that it's too much black and white.
What I was thinking of doing is taking some of the black and white tiles out, keeping the checkered theme, but adding an extra color like green or blue. To make it even cooler I was considering buying blue and green ceramic tile and then smashing it into little triangle shards. I will put the same color grout as the last grout was into the open square (where I pulled out one of the other old tiles). Then I will piece together a mixture of the green and blue in that spot like a mosaic. I'll do that to each of the open tile spaces so that the new pattern will be blue-green, white and black. It'll fit great with a palm tree theme or an under the sea theme, but still have the essence of the house and its original style.
The other thing about this house that is unique is that it has tiles in front of the door ways. Our back door has 15 tiles, three rows of 5, in front of it. Not on the outside, but on the inside. It's a little part where you can take your shoes off, but it's also very stylish. The thing that I want to fix the most about the design is that the tiles are all black and the grout is grey. When I change the carpeting, probably to a nice deep green, I want to paint the grout to match the carpet. That way the tiles stand out even more, so that it's almost like a piece of art all by itself.
Another ceramic design for the home is the spiral swirl of tiles. It's hypnotic, and it makes the room feel larger and smaller at the same time. Some people like it, but it's not really for me. I think that when me and my fiancee do our kitchen floor it will be a clean neutral color, but something that doesn't get dirty easily. Neutral will always go with any themes I decide to do the kitchen in. If I choose tan tiles I could go with any theme- sunflower theme, apples every where theme, cottage theme, or even Italian cafe Java theme. Tan is so versatile for tile designs. If you want to you could go tan, sandy brown, coffee brown-black, in different sizes of rectangles to do a totally modern pattern, or the other path of old-fashioned by just doing big aged tiles with a marble finish.
Whatever you're doing, whether it's putting in tiled window sills or tiling your basement to look like a 60's diner with root beer floats and karaoke, ceramic tile is the way to go. Go crazy with it and you won't regret it. Because not many people who build houses use it in their designs anymore, your house will be the most unique and expensive looking on the block.
