How To Lay A Ceramic Tiles Cove Base

Cove base, which may also be called vinyl moulding or vinyl cove base depending on your contractor or home products dealer, is a relatively easy and affordable solution for finishing your ceramic tile flooring installation for your home or business.

The durable and water-resistant material makes this product easy to clean and long-lasting. Several designer colors and finishes, along with the requisite decorative lip, make this a versatile solution no matter what type of room you'll use it in.

Instructions

1. Clean and thoroughly dry the area where you plan to install your base before starting your project to ensure maximum adhesion of the product.

2. Measure each area where you plan to install the cove base. Note your measurements on a piece of paper to refer to later when cutting the material. Always double-check your measurements before cutting.

3. Lay the cove base face down on your cutting board or wood piece. Apply your measure lengthwise on the base and mark your cut lines with a pencil on the back side of the cove base.

4. Using your metal measuring square to align with your cut mark, score the cove base by running your utility knife back and forth a few times until it is easy to cut. Use care to keep an exact angle when you cut your pieces to ensure a snug fit as you join it with next piece leaving a seamless line of base when your installation is complete.

5. Remove the lip on the bottom of the second piece of cove base carefully when cutting your inside corner pieces that will connect together. You may find it easier to cut a little of the lip at a time checking it as you go to make sure it fits snugly before you adhere it to your wall.

6. Trim the cove base that will be pulled around your wall's corners to make it fit flush with the wall for a professional look. As you wrap your base around your wall's corners, use your pencil to indicate the point where the base meets the wall's corner point. Turn the area you marked inside out so that it is face-to-face over your straight-edge tool. Using your knife, gently trim the vinyl from the inside to about half the original thickness. Your base will fit noticeably more tightly and eliminate any unsightly gaps between the base and your wall.

7. Lightly spread a coat of cove base adhesive onto the back of each piece once you have tested to ensure all of your pieces fit together correctly. Firmly press each piece to the wall and hold it to allow it to properly set up and adhere to the wall. Use a wet washcloth to wipe any excess from the front.
