The hall can be very dull and dark if you are not careful as most halls do not have large (if any) windows or much natural light but there are quite a few things you can do to brighten it up and make it one of the nicest rooms in your home, ready to welcome guests.
1. Get Rid of Clutter
It is very easy for the hall to becoming a place where all kinds of clutter gets left whether that is junk mail, shoes or school and gym bags. Make sure that you clear out everything that does not belong there.
2. Cover it Up
If your family insist on dumping things in the hall make sure that they have a place to leave everything, whether that is a coat stand or a shoe cabinet or even just a big wooden chest or box where everything can be left.. If you have an ugly radiator in your hall, cover it with a radiator cover. This will add an attractive shelf for plants or art work too.
3. Balance Proportions
You can do a lot to change the proportions of the room. If you have high ceilings but your hall is narrow, add a dado and/or picture rail to give the illusion of shorter walls. If you paint the ceiling and area above the picture rail (including the ceiling) in a medium tone and give the area below a lighter shade this will help too. Create the illusion of width in your hall by installing plank flooring across the width of the room instead of along the longest wall. If your ceilings seem low use a pattern of vertical stripes on the walls, either using wallpaper or paint.
4. Reflect the Available Light
Mirrors are a great addition to the hall to reflect any light which is available (either natural light or from lamps) Lighter paint on the walls will help with this too.
5. Not Too Much Furniture
If your hall is not big enough to add storage, try using another room or closet near the hall for storing items like coats and shoes rather than cramming something in the hall itself. If you possibly can, try to include a narrow console table with a couple of lamps as this adds a nice welcoming touch. Just above the table s a great place for a large mirror.
6. Simple Decoration
In a small room like a hall, use very simple decoration but always include one or two unusual items to draw the eye and give the room something special. In this case less is more.
7. Avoid Dark Flooring
Although dark flooring seems the most practical in a room which is so near the front door, light tiles or medium oak flooring are quite easy to clean and will make the room seem much brighter than dark carpet or other flooring.
