While years ago the kitchen was merely there to cook the food after which the moms were leaving this room right away, nowadays the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house. It can be even considered the main hub of the home. This is where the entire family is gathering to have breakfast, lunch and dinner, and this is where friends and family chit chat in the afternoon next to a home brewed cup of coffee or tea. Also more often than not this is the place where moms help their kids with their homework after school.
However have you noticed how many kitchen have bad illumination which is totally unsuitable for the cooking area? As this room is used more than simply for cooking, it needs proper kitchen lighting which is not only used for background lighting but also for task illumination. Not only that but various aspects of the kitchen need additional lighting as well, such as the undercounter cabinets and places just above the stove or the dishwasher.
Most homes still use the traditional fluorescent lighting which is no longer the recommended type as it is way too bright and it takes away from that homey and cozy effect. If you have a reflective countertop, this can really stress out your eyes. Also if you have an island area, it should be properly illuminated too with a separate source of lighting.
One of the best types of focused lighting is using pendant lights which can be used for the island area. The same can be said for recessed lights, which are quite appropriate for any kitchen. If you want to give illumination to your undercabinets area, you can easily use either tungsten or fluorescent lights, however they should be low voltage lights.
Some people also use track lighting, however this type of lighting should be close to the various work tables and countertops to give proper lighting. Basically the idea here is that every source of illumination is good for various areas of the kitchen, however proper care needs to be taken as to which lighting fixture to be used for which part of the room.
