Using Color When Decorating Kitchens

The kitchen is a place of hustle and bustle, work and function, it is a room dedicated to the creation of culinary treats which will nourish and invigorate your family and friends. In such an environment, your decorative efforts should be focused on trying to support the chef in these endeavors. Your goal should be to craft an environment that not only inspires the chef, but also makes them feel comfortable and relaxed within the setting. In such a task, color is one of your most valuable tools.

Different colors have different symbolic and representational meanings within an environment. Understanding these meanings is a great way to help control the more subtle aspects of a room's atmosphere.

One good example of this is the color red. Tones which fall in the category of red are usually very hot, and invigorating. They tend to call to mind crimson warfare, or blazing infernos, or even the amber light of a roaring explosion. Because of this, red tones tend to make an environment feel hotter.

In a kitchen, which is already quite warm, this can be a problem. However red is not without its use in this space. One of its other effects is that it tends to make people hungrier, increasing their metabolism, and speeding up their heart rate. Because of this, red can actually be an inspiring color in such a room.

By contrast, blue tones tend to be cool, calm, and soothing. However they also repress hunger, making them a dubious choice for a space where you want the chef to feel inspired by the food.

Generally earth tones are a good choice for this space, as they evoke just the right amount of heat and hunger, without overwhelming a room. Green colors are also useful, as many leafy vegetables, and other food stuffs share this coloring.
